The Tank Museum was founded in 1923 as a teaching resource for engineers and soldiers of the Tank Corps. Over the last 100 years, the Museum has dramatically transformed from a training aid for the army to a 21st century Museum aspiring towards access and excellence for all.

Based at Bovington Camp, the home of the tank, the Museum boasts the most comprehensive collection of armoured fighting vehicles in the world, originating from the Royal Armoured Corps, British Allies, and armies fighting against British forces. In addition, the Museum has a very strong supporting collection of medals, photographs, film, sound recordings, fine art, books, weapons, models and memorabilia. Current displays tell the story of the tank in the 20th and 21st century, from its inception in 1915 to the war in Afghanistan.

The entire collection has Designated Status and in 2018 The Tank Museum became part of Arts Council England's National Portfolio.

Over 200,000 people visit the Tank Museum every year where we bring the history of tanks and tank crew to life… Supported by the world’s best collection of tanks & action packed live displays. Our staff play a vital role in ensuring each and every one of them has a memorable and enjoyable visit.

Our Values

The values of The Tank Museum underpin the work of our team. Whilst there are a great variety of roles, specialisms, and professions across the organisation, we all share a common approach in our mission to tell the story of the tank and the people that serve in them.

  • We are AMBITIOUS. Driven by an aspiration to be the best, we strive to be better. We channel our creativity and competitiveness to make us innovative, forward thinking, and flexible to challenges.
  • We CARE. We work hard because we believe in the cause of the organisation. We are welcoming and friendly to all our visitors. We are inclusive, fair, and considerate of each other, showing great respect for our collections and for the stories we tell.
  • We display INTEGRITY. We are knowledgeable about our subject and professional in the way in which we conduct our business. We act responsibly and embrace responsibility. Our ethical grounding guides us to do the right thing by our audiences, our supporters, our collections and by each other.
