Volunteer Museum Guide
As a Museum Guide your tasks will vary from showing a visitor around the inside of Chieftain Main Battle Tank turret to explaining where the Tank Museum shop is – no two minutes are the same!
The Tank Museum was founded in 1923 as a teaching resource for engineers and soldiers of the Tank Corps. Over the last 100 years, the Museum has dramatically transformed from a training aid for the army to a 21st century Museum aspiring towards access and excellence for all.
Based at Bovington Camp, the home of the tank, the Museum boasts the most comprehensive collection of armoured fighting vehicles in the world, originating from the Royal Armoured Corps, British Allies, and armies fighting against British forces. In addition, the Museum has a very strong supporting collection of medals, photographs, film, sound recordings, fine art, books, weapons, models and memorabilia. Current displays tell the story of the tank in the 20th and 21st century, from its inception in 1915 to the war in Afghanistan.
The entire collection has Designated Status and in 2018 The Tank Museum became part of Arts Council England's National Portfolio.
Over 200,000 people visit the Tank Museum every year where we bring the history of tanks and tank crew to life… Supported by the world’s best collection of tanks & action packed live displays. Our staff play a vital role in ensuring each and every one of them has a memorable and enjoyable visit.
Our Values
The values of The Tank Museum underpin the work of our team. Whilst there are a great variety of roles, specialisms, and professions across the organisation, we all share a common approach in our mission to tell the story of the tank and the people that serve in them.
Armed Forces Covenant
As a signatory of the Armed Forces Covenant, The Tank Museum recognises the value of serving personnel, reservists, veterans, and military families. We welcome applications from veterans, Service spouses and partners, and members of the Reserve forces. You can find out more about the Armed Forces Covenant and The Tank Museum here.
